Del Sol
Question:
I’m thinking about buying a ‘94 or ‘95 del Sol. I was wondering what driving the car in the winter is like–does the top leak, do the wipers and defrosters work well enough for good visibility in the rain? I would appreciate any comments regarding this car. Thanks.

: I’m thinking about buying a ‘94 or ‘95 del Sol. I have a 93 Si, hope I can help. : I was wondering what driving the car in the winter is like–does the top : leak, Mine has never leaked. The seals tend to groan unless you keep them clean and well lubed with silicon. The pins rattle a bit in the older models, but someone here came up with a great, cheap solution: wrap them in teflon plumbing tape. Quiet as a tomb after that. : do the wipers and defrosters work well enough for good visibility in the : rain? I live in Maryland, and we use the DS throughout the rather severe winter last year. The wipers were fine, the heat in general is amazing; remember, this car has the same mechanicals as a regular Civic, including the heater section. With less than half the passenger volume as a Civic coupe, it will keep the interior quite toasty. The front defrost is effective, and using AC as well will clear the fog. The rear window has a defrost, and since it is pretty much recessed from the roof and butresses, it rarely gets any precipitation on it anyway. : I would appreciate any comments regarding this car. Glad to help. -Bentley

I was very happy with my 95 del sol last winter. I had no truble going thru 5 in. of snow. JUST becare ful the rear end likes to brake loose if you are going a little to fast. But on a scale on 1 to 10 I would give it a 8.5 example my old 92 accord I gave it a 5.5 OWNER of SOLUTIONS TECHNOLOGIES your source for Honda and Acura Performance parts at great prices

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and we get some nasty weather in winter around here. I had a ‘93 del Sol Si that saw a few winters. I bought it in February of 1993, so the first few months I owned it I drove it in snow. It had fair weather tires on it from Honda. That taught me that I should get snow tires. The following winter with snow tires on the del Sol I was great fun. Most mornings on the way to work I would play with this big F350 4X4 pickup truck. This guy thought that his truck could beat anything on the road in snow. My little bright green two seater drove circles around this pickup truck. One particularily bad snowstorm put snow up to my bumpers. Cars were stuck every were. Me and my del Sol had no problem. I attribute the great snow performance to the fact that a del Sol is realy a front engine, front drive Civic with a funky body, and snow tires. I see that others have commented on your questions about leakage, defrosters and such. I can only agree with their comments. I liked my del Sol Si, but would have rather had the VTEC engine, so when I heard the roumer that the del Sol would be cancled after 1996, I rushed out and replaced my del Sol Si with a del Sol VTEC. I’m looking forward to racing the new del Sol through the snow.

I have a 93 Del Sol (bought in Dec. ‘92) and I still like it. I live north of Boston so the car and I have had our share of winter driving fun. So far it’s been just fine. I’ve skidded a few times in the snow, but that had more to do with me that the car. The defroster works great and being able to crack the rear window helps a lot. My car does leak, a lot. I have used all kinds of treatments on the gaskets (including replacing), and so far nothing has helped. FWIW, I know people who have more recent Del Sols and they say they don’t have the same problems. The other issue is that the car creaks and squeaks over every bump. It’s much worse in the winter. All in all it’s been a good car. In 3.5 years and 50K miles I’ve replaced the tires once and I just got a new battery. I average around 32 MPG and the clutch is still going strong. Good Luck, Beth

Mine doesn’t leak, since it is a ‘96, which is after the redesign of the seals. Honda realized there was a problem with the early del Sols and came up with new seals that keep the car dry inside. You should be able to get the seals updated at an Honda dealer if you have an older del Sol. — Eric Damien Berna http:www.bernafamily.com

Hi Derek, Saw your post about snow tires, and just wanted to ask you. How do you keep your del Sol from leaking? I live in a climate not unlike Chicago and just got a del Sol, used, and she is really in clean, great condition, except for one small thing… the windows leak. Any ideas? I’m ordering a cover for her since I don’t have a garage. I don’t have snow tires on mine and have been doing fine on the snow and ice so far with all weather radials. Please post, though, if you find a really excellent snow tire for yours. Simone

is it in mint shape cosmetically? del sol parts are getting harder to come by. how many owners? riced out? original paint? unless its a 1-owner meticulously cared for car, be prepared for the possibility of needing a new engine. lemme check my local recycler, and see… KBB says $2900 in good condition, $3300 in excellent condition.
